I am going to spend a week in Mexico City in February, then two weeks on the beach in Huatulco. I am wondering about where to spend another week. I don't want to drive long distances. I've been to Cancun, Cozumel, Merida and looking for somewhere else - maybe colonial towns or pre-Columbian sites; maybe Acapulco or maybe just another week in Huatulco. I plan on flying in and out of Mexico City. Any suggestions are welcome.

How about SanCristobal de las Casas, a short bus ride from Huatulco then you fly back to CDMX from Tuxla...
Fun museums are the Amber, Jade, Chocolate and Coffee Museums...Sitting in the plaza listening to marimba music or a few miles to San Juan de Chamula with its church with the gold alter and market with hand woven textiles.........

Oaxaca city is an obvious choice if you havent been there yet. There are lots of prehispanic ruins nearby. A variety of market towns each day of the week, and natural attractions in the nearby sierra sur and sierra norte. An easy scenic six-hr bus ride from there back to Mexico City. I went to Acapulco this past winter and wouldnt recommend it until security improves. The beaches are nice, but no nicer than Huatulco. And it was a ghost town during the week.

PS: You can see the displaced Mayas of San Juan Chamula in the Oaxaca Zocalo selling chiclets and rebozos.

If you don't want to drive long distances, then take first class buses. If it were me, I would just bus from TAPO to Oaxaca, a place worth at least five days. From there there are van services which go down to the coast and that includes going to Huatulco and other places nearby like Zipolite and Puerto Escondido.
If you were more ambitious, you could go to Oaxaca and then on to San Cristobal. You then return to the Isthmus, turn left, taking the coastal highway up to Huatulco.

What about Guanajuato. It has the magnificent Juarez Theater. You can enjoy a spectacular view of the city from the top of Pipila. It offers “la callejonada”, kind of tour around the streets full of folklore and music. And, you can also visit its museums and some curious places like the Alley of the Kiss.

Acapulco is great, I am heading back there for the third year in a row in a couple of weeks. What I like about it is how lively it is at all times and crazy busy on weekends. So it will be a big change from Huatulco. I am a night person who likes to walk, so I liked the busy streets at night, felt the safest there of anywhere I have been in Mexico. Could be different for men, who have different safety concerns.

But two weeks at a beach would be too much for me to want more beach time. Chiapas is beautiful and very interesting.

Another vote for Oaxaca. It's beautiful, lively, and great for experiencing contemporary and historical culture.

In Morelos there's Xochicalco

Didn´t another contributor tell us that Xochicalco was closed when they went to visit a few weeks ago because of earthquake damage? In any case, check to make sure it´s open before going all that way.

San Juan de Chamula with its church with the gold alte

I don´t remember any ¨alter,¨ much less one made of gold. At the time I visited Catholic clergy weren´t even allowed in the church. I do remember the intense smell of burning copal, thick smoke, pine needles underfoot, locals drinking coca and pulque, and chickens running around with their heads cut off!
