Mercado Municipal 5 de Mayo is a large public market at the corner of 5 de Mayo and Cuauhtemoc, not too far from the harbour.

thanks bcmum, would they have a contact?

No, they just go down and then find a place. Places advertised on the internet were very expensive, which is why I asked them about it in the first place.
All Mexican towns, no matter how small, have a market. How do you think people get their food, otherwise? Large modern grocery stores are what is less common in smaller places.

As usual, good advice from mclarjh. Check it out before committing as refunds may be non-existent.

Thanks mclarjh, I found that "Mercado Municipal 5 de Mayo" that's exactly what I like!
But around that area, is it safe to rent an apartment?
The reason being is that it is a port and ports have a bad reputation.

I don´t know. That´s why I suggested perhaps renting a hotel room and personally inspecting the neighbourhoods and talking to locals so you can form your own opinion. Some apartments are online and may be in short supply. But many apartments are not online, and are only rented after a face to face meeting between the landlord and prospective tenant, and these ought to be available.

PS: For comparison: I´ve been to Salina Cruz several times, a very big port, and didn´t find the neighbourhoods near the port to be worse.

I think I will still check out both, Manzanillo and Melaque-Barra Navidad before deciding. Thanks!
