Hey all,

I'm doing a 3 week tour of ancient temple sites which ends in Tulum. I'll spend a week here then I'd like to spend a week in Oaxaca before making my way to Guatemala where I plan to stay a few weeks at Lake atitlan.

I'd like to avoid flying if possible, so scenic routes are preferred and anything I can book in advance even better!

Thanks in advance x

You can check intercity bus routes in southeastern Mexico (including the Yucatan, Oaxaca and Chiapas) at www.ado.com.mx. You'll face a couple of long legs, but the scenery is nice. When are you going?

Thanks both - Ado website is pretty useless tbh. Searching Tulum - Oaxaca on any date just brings up a message saying no buses available. I know there won't be a direct bus but it won't even show me alternative routes / dates. Any idea where I can find a schedule / list of routes? No worries if not, I guess I'll just visit an ADO office or speak to my tour guide when I get there.

Well, you're not going to find a bus that goes directly from Tulum to Oaxaca. You can do the trip if you switch buses in Villahermosa though. That might include a night's stay, or maybe you have to leave your luggage at Villahermosa's bus terminal checked luggage counter for a few hours.

I don't believe there are shuttle vans that go from Oaxaca to Lake Atitlan, and the ADO buses certainly don't. The easy way to do it would be to devote a couple days to San Cristobal toward the end of your week. There are shuttle vans from SC that go all the way to Panajachel on Lake Atitlan in a long day. San Cristobal itself is a really memorable town.

And there are departures direct from Oaxaca to Tapachula, if you prefer.

Villahermosa has a few attractions if you need to spend some time there. The regional anthropological museum was being renovated when I was there, but ought to be open now. And the Parque Museo La Venta is interesting and peaceful (as long as you avoid the crocodiles).
