My husband has never traveled outside the US so he's a little nervous but I have talked him into Mexico next spring. I want to ease him in gently so I'm planning on the Yucatan. Must sees are Chichen Itza, Coba and Ek Balam and a colonial town. Must dos are zip lining, Mayan culture and food plus fishing. We want to see the beach and lay on the sand while we drink beer a day or two but we're not divers or snorkelers.

I'm debating my route. I'm thinking a couple of nights in Playa, a couple at Mayaland (or one of the other hotels on the grounds at Chichen Itza) and a couple of days at a B & B in Valladolid. I'm thinking starting in Playa at a boutique hotel (we are soooo not AI people) would be a good way to ease him in but I want to make getting to the airport for departure easy. I know a couple of days in Playa would set his mind at ease but a spa/resort place would too.

So I could do Playa, Mayaland, then Valladolid OR Mayaland, Valladolid, Playa.

My question is.....would Mayaland (or equivalent) be "American" enough to start? Or is it Mexican and jungle enough that he will be nervous? And how hard would it be to get to the airport from Valladolid by bus? I'm not planning to rent a car, just do cab or bus.

Thoughts?

Why don't you take a cruise liner out of Galveston to Progreso and Cozumel. It is a seven day vacation for a reasonable prize

How long do you have for this trip? Any reason you don't want to rent a car, it's very easy to drive in the Yucatan and roads are good.

Recommend staying in Puerto Morelos for your first couple of nights, much nicer and relaxing then PDC. It's a small town on the Caribe, 20 min. from the airport, has a lot of different types of resatraunts, several/ a few euro ex pats have settled in PM and opened up very good cafes, also killer local food as well. Might be a good place to check out some fishing.

PDC will just remind him of Merikka. a very busy, touristy place, IMO.

Valladolid is a better place to stay for a visit to Chichen Itza, it's a cool colonial town, great walking place and excellent food.

If you want a nice jungle consider Calakmul for a couple nights, best ruins on the peninsula.

Yeah, what's the dude worried about, I bet a beer within 1/2 day he'll love Mexico, the food and the people.

Nervous about safety, mainly because he doesn't speak any Spanish. I will have a cheat sheet for him with the basics in case I'm not around.

We talked about a cruise but we agreed we would want more freedom over our schedule. Like we might not want to do the an activity the day it was offered.

We have up to 2 weeks but I want to cut it down to about a week so there are still things he will want to come back to see and do.

I debated a car but figures the bus system would be less stressful, given his nervousness about not being able to speak/read Spanish. He heard a story about somebody getting pulled over and not being able to communicate with the cop. But I will have to think more about it. Sure would be easier. And if we had a car I wouldn't have to worry about transportation to the airport the last day.

I hadn't really thought about staying in Puerto Morelos. If we stay on the beach could we walk to town? I think PDC has probably grown a lot since I was there 12 years ago so probably would feel too touristy.

I agree about Valladolid looking like an interesting place. That's the place I'm most excited about. I would spend my whole trip there and day trip anything I wanted to see. But i am trying to compromise. The only reason I was considering a couple of days at Mayaland was to wake up with jungle sounds and walk out to see the ruins, like a Mayan would have done when it was active. I'm a nerd.

Valladolid gets my vote for the most pleasant easy-going city in Mexico. Ek Balam is north of the city and Chichen Itza is an hour away by an hourly bus from the bus station. There are two fascinating underground cenotes nearby as well. There are good hotels and some good restaurants there. You don't need Mayaland.

It is very easy to get to from the airport. There is a frequent bus from the airport to the ADO station in Cancun downtown and then you hop on a bus to Valladolid which is about two hours away. Unless you are coming in very late, this is easy.

You can then see Ek Balam and take the early bus to Chichen Itza. After that you can go back to the coast and do what you want. Puerto Morelos is a good idea. It very atypical of what that area has become.

Valladolid sounds perfect. And I will have to read a little more about Puerto Morelos but it definitely sounds like what I would like. Much more local flavor. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a plan. Photos of many ruins on wolf calls.com and also see the website Yucatan Today for more information. I would skip the zip line business and also being hauled in the sky behind a boat. Have travel insurance if you do want to do these things.
