I've been to Isla Mujeres many times and have never had any real concerns for my safety but from recent news reports it appears gang and drug related violence seems to be creeping into the Cancun and maybe even Isla Mujeres area. I have a trip planned with my daughters, 9 and 11, for June and am wondering if anyone has insight, advice, or suggestions based on recent experiences.

I heard on CBC Radio a short while ago about a number of killings in a short period of time in Cancun. Here is one of the online news sources with that story: https://nypost.com/2018/04/11/streets-of-cancun-run-red-with-14-murders-in-36-hours/

And here is an excerpt from the US Dept of State:

"Quintana Roo state – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution due to crime.

According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred.

There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya."

Hi! I'm from Mexico and I live near to Cancun. It is true that on the last few months the state it's a little less secure. But I know that from touristic areas, hotels, restaurants, archaeological places and more everything is safe. I don't think you have to worry at all traveling with your daughters. I'm sure you are going to enjoy your vacations and you'll feel safe. If you want to know anything else, please let me know.

Thanks for the replies. I had seen those news stories and warnings shared above which is why I was concerned. My sense is that the likelihood of problems is very small, especially since we'll be on the island the entire time but even the ferries have apparently been a target and I'd heard there was some violence outside of a supermarket on Isla Mujeres.

Well it is an election year, when protest and hostilities increase. Been like this in Mexico since the revolution.

Yes, I think you can travel safely with your daughters and enjoy your vacations without problems. In addition to #2 and 3 information, I also read government strengthened security measures in the area and police is always present, so visitors can be safe.

A good friend, whom I have traveled with to Mexico 4 times at least, just got back from a 12 day stay in Puerto Morelos and Akumal, she traveled solo more than half the time and stayed in a condo with absolutely no problems at all and drove herself all over.

Thanks, my hunch is that unless we're stupid and go places we shouldn't (and wouldn't) it would be very unlikely for us to encounter any problems. Its the things like the ferry bomb and the beach shooting that most concern me because obviously we'd be doing those things.

You may find this article reassuring, titled "Despite Violence, Tourism Is Strong in Mexican Resort Areas": https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/27/travel/mexico-tourism-violence.html
