To answer the question in your title, I'm not sure it is safe for a single woman to drive through Mexico. You may want to have a careful look at the official Government of Canada website....

https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/mexico

There are some areas that are NOT advisable to drive in. One other point to note is that if you travel in areas in which the Government has advised against travel, your medical insurance may be void.

My suggestion would be to board the Dog, fly down and limit your travels to normal tourist areas.

I cannot board my dog for 6 months. I also have nowhere to leave my car for that long.

There could be some serious consequences with your plans, but of course the decision is yours. Your plans appear to be based more on the fact that you have nowhere to leave your car and dog for six months, and less on the aspect of safety. I simply wanted to provide relevant information on the risks you may face.

You may want to consider the scenario of what will happen if you were to be injured and require a stay in hospital. What would happen to your dog and car? Be sure to get comprehensive medical insurance, which may be a challenge as many providers only cover periods of up to 30 days. Some hospitals in Mexico may require full payment up front, so hopefully you have the resources to cover that? A cell phone would be a really good idea for the type of trip you're proposing.

Good luck!

So, it is April 2018 now and I am considering driving from Toronto to Ajijic next January myself. I am female and will be traveling alone.....but no dog. I’m just wondering how your drive to Mexico was and if you encountered any of the problems mentioned in this forum?

Hi Jill! I had zero of the issues anyone mentioned. There was a couple times I was scared ( had a large group of men congregated outside my hotel room door for hours...no idea why) and I did get lost once. My goal for each day was whatever Google maps said was 5 hours away. Sometimes I would get there sooner and sometimes much, much later due to construction, sudden torrential downpours etc... My biggest tip is make sure you have toilet paper and hand sanitizer at every stop.

Link above to a recent LP TT thread. This should illustrate the importance of making sure your paperwork is in order.
