Believe it or not I'm having a hell of a time finding an inexpensive, nice hotel in Playa del Carmen for a reservation in mid-May. I have searched Thorn Tree and found some good posts on the topic although many of the suggested hotels on the threads I found are way out of my price range. I was hoping to get a reservation at the Posada Sian Ka'an- they have nice looking standard rooms listed for $32/night, and they were highly recommended by the Moon travel guide I have. But I've emailed them (no response) and called twice (both times my info was taken and I was told I'd be called back, and wasn't), so I'm thinking I might have to give up on them. Doing an internet search for accomodation in PDC is migrane-inducing. There are SO many options, but I'm not interested in, or can't afford, most of them. Some of the places I've checked claim to have no vacancies for the period I want to visit. Someone in an old thread suggested the Hotel Mayeli but I can't find any contact info on that, or a website with any details.
So can anyone recommend a fairly inexpensive (like, $30-40/night, although more is doable), nice hotel that will accept children? (I'll be travelling with one child). I'd love something more independent and colorful rather than the sterile, all-inclusive type. I'd rather make a reservation in advance than try to find something when we arrive. PDC will be the last stop on a trip that will include stays in Ek Balam and Merida, both where I've already secured accommodation. I really don't want to be running around trying to find a hotel after we drive in all the way from Merida.
I realize that requests like this come up over and over again so I appreciate everyone's patience!

Send a PM to Patywolf, she knows this town, look at the post under yours, she also has a great website full of pictures...suerte
Hotel Girasol - $38
Casa de Gopala - $40
Hotel Alux - $35
Pension San Juan - $38-$43
Hotel Maya Turquesa - $40
I don't know why you are having problems with Sian Ka'an. We have stayed there twice and never had any problems. In May you should be able to just walk up and get a room at any of these places

Semana Santa is fast coming up. All the hotels are booked and busy. No one has time to get back to you right now. Wait till after Easter when the town empties out and you wont have a problem at all. At this time of year hords of tourists from other countries plus hords of Mexicans all go to the beach. You might want to try a cabana at La Ruina right on the beach. Think they are about $25 a night. I saw several children staying there yesterday. Do as IHX suggests just bus yourself to Playa and check out several places in May no problem finding just what you want.

For those posters who are not aware of what "Semana Santa" means. It means Easter that happens the same time as it does in the United states - April 8th. This is a major holiday in Mexico as is Christmas and many Mexicans take vacations this time of year. I find it hard to believe that one would have a problem finding a place to stay in Playa del Carmen in the middle of May. Edmund

I can recommend the maya bric which at $50 for a double is just above what you would like to spend. It's clean and quiet and it has a great location.
I've also stayed at the Hotel Alux which IHX has recommended. It's okay as well.
Don Emilione is my favorite though. It's the same price as the maya bric but I'd say a bit nicer over all.

Thanks for the report. In spite of the growth and changes, I still enjoy Playa del Carmen quite a bit. Yes, it's touristy, but it's still inexpensive and it has great beaches. There's a nice article on today's CNN Travel about the region: Barefoot Luxury on the Riviera Maya.

Thanks for the information! I'll wait until after Easter when things settle down to try to make reservations. I know about Semana Santa- I was in Puerto Rico once during Semana Santa and it was chaos. I had fun and met a lot of friendly Puerto Ricans but the beaches were packed.

BTW IHX- I just got a callback from Sian Ka'an (finally!)- they're going to be doing remodeling in May so they're not taking any reservations. Good to know. I'll check out some of the other links you provided, I'm sure I'll find something nice.
How is parking in PDC? Should I be worried about finding a place to leave my car?
