Hi.
I just booked a super good deal from bestfares.com, $370 round trip + hotel from New York City per person between 9/1 - 9/5. I think it is a super deal... when I saw it, I just booked it without researching into too much. Anyway, I just started researching, i found out that people are saying Mexico City is not safe, there are a lot of taxi scam, and they will drive you somewhere, rob you, beat you up..etc... Is that still the case now...?
They even say, that the police at Mexico City is not trust worthy, you have to give them some money for them to help you out if you get into trouble...
Anyway, my hotel is on
Paseo De La Reforma 24 Col. Centro, Mexico - Hotel name is: "Fontan Hotel Mexico"
I think this is the central location where the historical sites are, can someone confirm for me please.. And if you know where this is, can you tell me the cross street, so i can locate it on the map... (And if you know how much it will cost from 'sitio' from the airport to the hotel, that would be great!)
Also, since i will be arriving at 3pm at mexico city, and leaving on 9/5's early morning, i basically only have 3 1/2 days to tour around... what is the best 'non-misable' place that I should go to?? I am very interested in ancient sites, ruins and some museums... (I went to Italy 2 years ago, and had a great time walking around Roma, and the views at Venice is just great!)
my Questions.
1. How much is the subway in Mexico City?
2. THe Hotel that i will be staying in, Centro - is that near zocola? And is my hotel in a safe location?
3. I want to do a day trip to the Aztec pyramid (is that the name?) Can you let me know where and how much are the bus fares to go there? And how long..etc..
4. If i do the day trip outside of mexico city, when I come back, and use the SITIOs to call a cab - how does it work? I pick up the phone, tell the person i need a cab, and then a cab will show up in a few minutes? How will i know that is actually a cab called by Sitio, instead of just one of the scammy cabbie?
5. Can someone tell me a market near my hotel were I can shop around? Or like a street where they have shops..etc... near my hotel..
6. Since my time there will be kind of short, can you name some unmisiable sites that i should visit..
I know i am asking alot, i know nothing about mexico city until a few hours ago.. after i book the package... i greatly appreciate it if you can help me out..
Thanks alot!!
Tak

"takkie"
(lol)
subway cost: a whole whoppin' 20 cents
and agree, that is a great deal you got.

Hello.
Do you know how to get from Centro to Teotihuacan location?
And I believe my hotel is at the end of the Alamark Park and De La Reforma - I cannot find this Alamark park anywhere on the map - anyone?
Anyone have other answers to my questions?
I am leaving in 3 days... and trying to get as much information as possible... i could research, but sometimes specific questions are not answered by googling...
:)
Thanks!

hey Takkie, I believe that you will get the best insight about Mexico City from a girl called munecabrava, she is very balanced in her view about it

Thank you for the replies.
Do you know how much does it cost for the bus going to Teotihuacan? I havent review the chapters yet, but i want to post the question incase its not covered there.
Also, I read in guide books, that there is a great tour bus where you can get on and off multiple times during the day. Where is this bus, and how much are they?
I just found out the reviews for my hotel are pretty bad, i am afraid that they might not hvae a good concierge, (I dont think they have a safe) - but they DEFINITELY have a taxi call service for me, right? I am guessing most of the hotel have that service for its guest, no matter how bad it is?
I want to see a bull fight as well - not sure where it is, or how much it is. Please englighten me!
Thanks!
tak

Hi,
Is there any towns in Mexico City that I should NOT be staying late at? (like after what time is late? I am from NYC, the standards here are pretty much past 12 midnight is late)
And same as Metro / Bus - what time is late for these? (So i will know when I should start taking cabs instead of using the buses or metros)
Thanks again!!
Tak

Some days ago, someone asked similar questions, you can check here
Mexico City has many attractions, so you wont have time to see them all. The metro stops working before midnite. You can rely on the metro and the light rail to vist the main attractions in Mexico City. As you're from NYC, I'm quite sure u'll feel conformtable in Mexico City. As in any big city there are dodgy areas, but dont be put off by all those travel warnings. Thousands of tourists vist Mexico City every year and have a good time

Thanks for your input.
How are the lines waiting for museums? Is there anything I should book tickets in advance? So far, i dont have any tickets to anywhere yet (Except my flight tickets!)
I want to see a bulls fight, the museum of anthropology, and the Aztec pyramid, Teotihuacan. Should I book ticket in advance for thse? I will be there from Saturaday and leaving Wednesday morning.
thanks,
tak

"they don't have a safe"
i wouldnt worry about that unless you plan on taking gold bouillon or something and i am sure what valuables you do have (expensive camera, money) will be on you during the day and with you at all times.i would suggest leaving expensive jewelry/watches and designer clothes at home too, no use attracting any more attention to oneself than necessary is my opinion.

and yes there is taxi scam.was reading in a book last night about a mexican man (who has lived in mexico city all his life) that was attacked very badly and robbed in one there--so not only are tourists targets.but seems by what you wrote in op you definately know if taking a taxi, only sitio...
