I may be making a return visit to Oaxaca soon and am racking my brain trying to remember the name of the place I stayed at last time I was there. It was within pretty short walking distance of the main bus terminal for buses from Mexico City. It had a beautiful courtyard full of vegetation- no pool- where everybody sat around the same table for breakfast. The door to your hotel would open up to the courtyard- like a motel in the states. I seem to remember two levels but that could be off. And it was about a 20 minute walk to the zocalo. At the time I think we were paying like $40 a night but I'm sure it's gone up since 2005. Any ideas where this could have been?

And if you have no idea, do you have recommendations that fit this bill? I'd like a place where I can meet other travelers, but that is still a nice place. So no hostels, but doesn't need to be luxury either. I'd be there with my wife who has never travelled to Oaxaca before.

Thanks to all the thorn tree denizens for any help.

Is it the hotel Las Mariposas ?

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

Casa Angel. It is still there. The area is Jalatlaco. Near the bus terminal and Llano Park. Parrots in the courtyard, right?

I agree it reminds me of Casa Arnel (sp!) too. I used to stay in one of the small rooms with general bath for only 150 MXN per night years ago, when the grandfather would bring his caged parrots out each day, and Carmen would serve desayuno at the big table. Prices have gone up, grandpa´s gone, Carmen´s left, and tour buses stop in and liven the place up regularly. And there´s a taller brand new hotel right behind (to the north) of Casa Arnel that just opened. But the shaving brush tree across the street in the church courtyard is still blooming once again!

Do you remember a miniature library building in the courtyard to house the collection of an anthropologist? If so, it was Casa Arnel, which is about five blocks from the bus station.

It was Casa Arnel! Thanks Geriande. I had forgotten about the parrots, but yep, now that you mention them they were definitely there. Also the mini library. In fact, when I stayed there was an academic who was in Oaxaca from a conference and he was reminiscing about having stayed at Casa Arnel a long time ago (and this was already in 2005).

Bummer about the changes, do you all still recommend it under the new management? It was so charming and reasonable when I stayed. Just checked off all the boxes.

It's hard to get a personal experience anymore travelling and I definitely got that at Casa Arnel.

Same old management. There are still lots of gringos staying there. Jalatlaco is more gentrified now, thanks to all the gringos.

mclarjh, is Arnel himself still there? And the hairless dog (not a chihuahua)? I had heard, sometime back, that there is new ownership, which would disagree with what you wrote. I certainly hope the "old" ownership is still the same, as Arnel was a real gentleman; one of the nicest people I've ever met.

We last stayed at Casa Arnel 3 years ago, if I recall correctly, and Arnel and his wife, Lilia, were still in charge. But since then, I have no info.

Yes, Arnel is still there, and the xolo too! They have opened a little cafe open to the street at the corner of their property; that must be two or three years old by now.
