We will be spending 4 days in Guadalajara in December, arriving by bus (Primera Plus), and staying right downtown. We prefer to travel by local buses, and shy away from organized tours. We would like to go to Tequila, Guachimontones and Ajijic, but discovering how to get to any of these places by local bus is proving impossible! Help would be appreciated.

We normally book a car/driver through our hotel as we did through the Quito Real in Guadalajara.

Roughly how much it cost?

This old post has some good info:

AFAIK there are frequent departures to Tequila and Ajijic... Guachimontones would probably require a bus to Teuchitlán and some other transport from there.

Where do those buses leave from - the old terminal?

There are frequent second class buses to Chapala and Ajijic departing from the second class terminal about ten blocks south of Guadalajara centro. From memory: time enroute approx one hr; cost approx 50 MXN.

Thanks for that mclarjh. Is centro the same as Antigua Central Camionera on Los Angeles? Sorry to be so ignorant!

Hey Jane, props to you for asking if 'centro' and 'central' were the same place/thing. They're not; 'centro' is generic for a downtown/historic center, whereas 'central' refers to a bus station. You'd be surprised to know that some so-called experienced Mexico travelers still haven't figured that out.
