agree with Aslukas, we found renting bikes and cycling out to the cenotes a great way to spend a day. your under no time pressure waiting on bus timetables. the cycle route is very safe and is no more than 6 or 7 kilometres. as for safety concerns, we found the Yucatan peninsula to be very safe, it is after all one of the most touristy regions in the world. as long as you keep a sensible head you should have no problems

Ive rented bikes and cycled to cenotes a couple of times in the Yucatan. Once was a short trip from Tulum, and the other was a 56 km circular trip starting and ending in Valladolid, but this route passed through some remote areas, take a buddy if youre concerned about safety.
