Well I just thought I would share my experience of extending my tourist card yesterday!
It was a fairly easy process had to fill in a form have a copy of my passport and a copy of my FMT also pay $247 pesos at a bank hand all the information in and then had to wait for them to process it all the whole process only took 2 hours! I did not have to show them a return plane ticket, I only had to show them a credit card which expires in the next 2 months which I thought was funny as they accepted that. I was not asked any questions as to why I wanted to stay for longer in fact I was not asked anything so maybe it will be easier now for people to extend there tourist card.

Recent news articles said that Mexicos President was suggesting that it should be made easier for tourists to come more oftern and stay longer.

Thanks for coming back to report on the experience. What you experienced is in line with most reports we receive here, regarding additional time requests. Which city did you do this in?

Yes, that's about what you can expect from what people here in Oaxaca tell me. However, some tourists balk at spending 2 hours of their vacation time and paying another 247 pesos, when they have already paid this with their airline ticket for their 30 or 90 day FMT. That is what Calderon, I think, is trying to streamline, i.e. give everyone 180 days. Saves some paperwork. However, Mexico may lose some tourist tariffs this way. On the other hand, probably most tourists only stay 30 to 90 days, which traditionally they have been given upon entry by air.
