Hi, sorry for the long question! I'm planning a 3-week trip to Mexico that ends 11/4. I will be in CDMX for the first two weeks. I was planning to go to Morelia for the third week, possibly going to Patzcuaro for Dia de los Muertos, but I'm getting the impression that the celebration in Patzcuaro has been 'discovered.' Would people recommend going to Morelia anyway (I haven't been there since the 1990s, but remember it as lovely) or staying around CDMX and going to the Teotihucan Valley for Dia de los Muertos?

Thanks

'Discovered' is a huge understatement. In fact, if you've only begun to plan now, affordable lodging options are already slim to none, heavy on the none. Patzcuaro is the most commercialized/popular DOD spot in all of the Republic, Oaxaca probably being #2. Every 2 peso ranchito in the country will have their own DOD stuff going on with varying degrees of "authenticity". Wherever you go, you'll find something going on worthwhile of a couple of pictures.

Morelia IS still totally lovely. One of my favourite cities in Mexico.
A couple of years back, someone posted about going to Patzcuaro for Dia de Muertos and she was planning it about one week in advance and it sounded like she found accommodation, although I certainly agree that you would be best to get on it right away, if that is what you decide.

Patzcuaro or Isla de Janitzio, near Patzcuaro? Two very different experiences.

If you are going to Morelia solely as a waystop to Patzcuaro area and DoD ... I think there areas closer to Mexico City that offer less commercial DoD events. One such alternative is Tlaxcala.

The largest / most attended DoD cemetery visits in all of Mexico are in Mixquic - on the outskirts of Mexico City.

There are a great many prior DoD discussions archived here on TTMB, including ones talking about Patzcuaro. You might want to have a look at them.

I have only been to Patzcuaro that time of the year. Just too crowded and over whelming IMO. I actually prefer Oakland,Ca fete with well over 100 altars and about 100,000 mostly Mexicans at this family alcohol free event. Then the following week San Francisco Mission district event is also excellent .
