Hi all,

I'm going to be in Mazunte from Sunday-Saturday next week with my partner, and we're trying to think of a couple of non-beachy things to do. We're both pretty interested in coffee, and thought it might be fun to do a day trip to a finca in the mountains of Oaxaca. We found Finca Las Nieves (which has daylong tours from Puerto Escondido), but were curious whether anyone here had additional recommendations!

Thanks,
Jackie

I don´t have specific recommendations, but there is a lot of coffee grown in Oaxaca (I just read in the local newspaper that it´s the second greatest value crop after maize), and there are a lot of fincas or cafetales in the foothills above the resorts. Huatulco would also offer guided tours, if that´s what you want, or guide yourself to Pluma Hidalgo (there are lots of fincas nearby) or another town and explore. See tomzap for additional info and photos.

PS: I almost forgot, McDonald´s once again advertises that they use coffee grown in Oaxaca.

Best coffee I had in Oaxaca was at the Women's market just out of the main district. In fact the best coffee I have ever had in Mexico.

Where is the women's market, Stew?

If you´re looking for other ideas: visit a small town during their fiesta (check local newspapers or the local tourist office for dates); visit one of the lagunas, that is, Manialtepec or Chacahua, west of Puerto Escondido, for some nature and AfroMexican culture; etc.

I believe it is just a few blocks North of the main plaza. My wife's favorite spot with lots of hand made items along with the restaurant/coffee stand. We ate there a couple of times as well as drinking brewed java along with buying package coffee.
PS I hope I do not have my directions backwards as it has been few years.

Grano De Oro in the B. Juarez market will grind/blend to your taste. Better than buying prepackaged. Anónimo, if I recall, you're in the Morelia/Patzcuaro area? If so, I'm jealous of your proximity to Cafe La Lucha. Arguably some of Mexico's best, as Michoacan coffee is not grown in large enough quantities to export.

Café la Lucha, What is that? There's really no decent coffee here in Patzcuaro. I live in Patzcuaro, and I buy it from the cafés here but it is mostly from Chiapas or Puebla. I have heard that there is some coffee grown in Michoacán, but where? And is la Lucha a café or a coffee plantation? Interesting comment.

For info: I read today in La Noticias that the Primer Festival de Cafe Oaxaquena is being held in el barrio de Jalatlaco, Oaxaca de Juarez on the 16 y 17 de Deciembre.
