We are interested in visiting Palizada as part of a month long trip through Chiapas, Campeche and the Yucatan. I have seen some vague mention of boat trips from Ciudad del Carmen to Palizada (via the Palizada River)in old blog posts but am unable to find any current information. Has anyone done this trip?

Sounds like an interesting adventure, are you going for fishing, pueblo Majico or ?.....Might be a long boat and mosquito laden trip....Google maps shows a drive time of 4 hours...Been to and through Isla del Carmen a couple times but never looked into panga trips.....good luck .......
The visitmexico website says visitors can rent a boat in Palizada and visit the Laguna de Terminos, but no mention of reaching Ciudad del Carmen across the laguna. I stayed overnight in Cd del Carmen once, and visited the waterfront where all the oil workers were parading their new pickups, but didn't visit the port in the northwestern corner, which would be of interest to you.
I have not done it, but I did research it. You are correct, there was a boat from Ciudad del Carmen. I went back through my notes and the link I had to information about the boat is now dead. The one link I did have that is still active is to this Facebook page which hasn't been updated in years:
However, this would seem to indicate it is no longer running:

Thanks so much for your replies. We plan to travel by bus from Palenque to Palizada. We thought a boat ride might be an interesting way to get to the coast.
We will scope out the situation once we arrive but sounds like we will need to continue on via bus.
At the risk of being slightly off topic, over the winter I saw increasing reports about the low water levels, particularly at presa Benito Juarez (also known as El Marques) near Santa Maria Jalapa del Marques, Oaxaca. Reportedly the fishermen who were no longer able to find fish, found customers who wanted to be launched across the presa to the buildings of the old town that stood there before being flooded, which were reappearing from the waters. Here's a link if anyone's interested: http://noticieros.televisa.com/ultimas-noticias/estados/2017-04-12/sequia-permite-visitar-templo-y-panteon-sumergidos-presa-oaxaca/
