Agree. Do Craig's List buying in the US with a legal title at Patty suggested.

I believe the CURP is the number you get from Immigration, The RFC from Hacienda is the Mexican tax ID number...
The issue still remains that a tourist can not obtain a CURP and to obtain and RFC a non-resident needs to form a corporation. Quite a bit of work to buy and register a car to drive away in.
The article at the link specifically says both corporations and individuals can have RFC. I Know that is correct. When I got temporary residence a few years ago, I finally, after great travails, got my CURP. Once you get that, you can get an RFC on-line by just going to the correct URL. So, I have both an RFC and a CURP.

The funny thing is anything is possible in Mexico, anything. I entered Mexico with an FMM 180 day tourist permit, I was informed a RFC number was needed to sell some property I acquired..Well I did not want to become a Temporary Resident and go through the consulate BS back in California and having to get the CURP so every one told me to visit a "fixer", she accompanied me to the Hacienda office and about 1/2 an hour later I had my RFC number...Love Mexico.
