Suggest you buy one in usa and then pay for it in full before you start this trip. You will have many borders to cross and it has been done but you will need all kinds of proper paper work for this. There is a book out now by a couple who drove from Canada down to the end of South America but they imported their van from Europe to begin the trip with. Might be better to travel by bus as you can be at risk camping. Have lots of insurance for yourselves and your camper van.

I believe you can not purchase a vehicle as a tourist......

Well you can buy one but you may have a problem with it if you try to take it out of country. For a long time I had a Harley shortster stashed in Cancun Centro that I bought there and rode when I was there but I always knew could never take it home. Maybe if I had parted it out and sent it out in boxes. It was fun while it lasted but it was in awful shape.

If you do not have a CURP (MX tax ID) you are going to have a very hard time obtaining registration.

I own a MX truck/camper, am a MX resident with US citizenship and take my truck to the US as often as want I just can not have it in the US for more than something like 12 months nor can I ever import it to the US and have it US plated.

I believe the CURP is the number you get from Immigration, The RFC from Hacienda is the Mexican tax ID number...

The issue still remains that a tourist can not obtain a CURP and to obtain and RFC a non-resident needs to form a corporation. Quite a bit of work to buy and register a car to drive away in.

Not sure, but I think they have these things called boats that lots of overlanders use to get around the Darien Gap. Never used one, but it's just what I've heard, I could be wrong.
