Longford, I own an apartment in Colonia Deportes and spend 3-4 months a year in it. You seem to get most of your Mexico City experiences through websites and other fearful people.
Sunday night/Monday morning can be very busy at the airport. Still as in much of the country nights with 100% occupancy are pretty rare, chances are you will be fine. Might be hard to get a reservation anyways if you are arriving late, they probably won't hold it past 6pm.
