I have this $300 credit on Southwest I have to use by mid-May. Thinking of flying down to Mexico City, then visiting Angangueo and Tlalpujahua -- I like small mining towns. Not interested in the monarchs, though. I see a bus from Poniente to Angangueo (Zina bus), and also a bus from Tlalpujahua back to Poniente (Pegaso line). Not having any luck finding a way to connect the two. They're only about 40-50 kilometeres apart. Don't really want to backtrack to Zitacuaro. So has anyone done this and can confirm there may be a bus headed that way?

It´s too bad there´s no Google streetview of Angangueo´s streets or I´d suggest looking for colectivo taxis or camionetas parked near the mercado for their destinos. I didn´t check the other town.

I've actually done that in the past with good results. It's amazing how much intelligence you can gather just by using street view. At this point, I can't even find the bus terminal in Angangueo, maybe there isn't one and they just drop at an intersection.

We have driven from Angangueo to Tlapujahua. The road goes up the hill to the butterfly reserve and then drops down into Angangueo. Part of the road is dirt, but it's not a bad road. I am all but certain that once you get to Angangueo you can arrange for a ride to Tlapujahua. During butterfly season there is transportation to the butterfly reserve. Tlapujahua is not much further. I loved Tlapujahua. Very picturesque. We stayed in a great hotel on a hill in town that had floor to ceiling picture windows. We watched the sun rise over the town. I'm traveling now and don't have the name of the hotel with me. I also hear the El Oro, just down the road from Tlapujahua, is a great litle town too. All three cities are Pueblo Magicos.

We took a combi from Tlapujahua to Angangueo on a Sunday and went to Sierra Chincua the following day. This was March 2016. We got the last one of the day. I am not sure if buses travel that route. They didn't that day. We got the last combi and wanted to see the monarchs the next day. Not sure how often they run, but not many apparently on Sunday.

In 2010 I went to Sierra Chincua and got out on the highway to go to Tlapujahua. This was the season after the big rains and flood in Angangueo and transport was sketchy. More vehicles were going the opposite direction towards Angangueo I waited it out for about an hour and half on the road and figured if it got too late, I would go back to Angangueo. A taxi pulled up and let some people out. I asked if he was going my direction. He said he wasn't. For some reason he changed his mind and said he would take me. His wife was riding a long. When I asked the price, I was shocked how reasonable it was as I was told it would be expensive.

He picked up another fare along the way and they stopped to pick up a wallet in the middle of the road and there was no money but i.d. and they seem to know the person! The drove me right to the tourist office so I could ask about rooms. I have found when things seem impossible, they seem to work out. Sometimes you get wrong information, mixed information etc. We took a bus from Angangueo to Cd Hidalgo (Mich) so I think you will be able to connect one way or another. Suerte!

Thanks! Booked the ticket, got some hotels lined up, I'll figure out the Angangueo to Tlalpujahua connection when I get there. Sounds like there are some options. I'm also going to spend a night in Toluca, I think. Haven't been there before and would like to check it out.
