I'm going to a wedding in Playa del Carmen in the fall. Flying in and out of Cancun. If we see the Mayan ruins around Playa del Carmen in the first few days, is there another place near there I should see that would be a 2-3 day excursion?

There's lots to do depending on your interest. The following is very busy but doable especially if you have a rental car. You could stop at Coba, Ek Balam and/or a cenote with a night in Vallalodid. Then early morning at Chichen Itza and on to Merida. The next day go to Uxmal or do the Ruta Puuc and then head back to PDC.
