US citizens can Use American Express in Cuba?

Country forums / Cuba / Cuba

I spoke with an American Express representative today and asked if I could use my Amex card in Cuba, I had to wait 10 minutes while he checked, and he said yes, I'd be able to withdraw money using my card. Has anyone US person successfully used their Amex card in Cuba?

I don't know anyone who's had any success using an AMEX card in Cuba,to my knowledge only 2 credit cards are available to Americans for use in Cuba for ATM withdrawals and neither are AMEX.One is Stonegate bank based out of Florida and the other is from a bank in Puerto Rico, Banco Popular that's it.

John Kavulich claimed that Natbank of Florida had also arranged for their cards to work.

But as you say - I have not heard of any Amex card working.

Ask that rep if he would stand by his words with enough confidence to send funds from his own pocket via Western Union when you find yourself sleeping on the street because the card is refused, and get his personal cell phone contact number to do so! LOL

I am prepared to bring enough cash, but got excited when Amex gave this info. I read recently on Tripadvisor a wells fargo rep had told someone the same thing about their credit card. Amazing how poorly run some offices are. I even did a travel advisory with them. Thanks for the replies everyone.

If you can find an ATM in Cuba that will dispense cash to a Wells Fargo or AMEX credit or debit card, you should be able make a lot of money from people who will bet that it is impossible.
