Hi,
I'm an Irish guy, 22 and I'd love to learn how to sail.
Nothing fancy, I don't want to go down the paying $2000 a day "adventure" route, just some guy with a boat messing about would be perfect.
If anyone has any info on it I'd hugely appreciate it!!!
Steve

Most resorts have little sailing dingies that you can play with but you will not learn to sail in Cuba.

You live in Ireland, surrounded by the ocean. Learn to sail there.....in Cuba you will not be able to...cheers

I'm affraid my good friend Zed is correct on this one. All boats in Cuba go only in one direction. NORTH. So lerning to sail is difficult.
Have you checked out Fantasia Ferries LTD. They have daily sailings to Cuba from Mexico, Jamaica and Key West, FL.

Poster #1 is correct. Sailing is not a sport in Cuba. The only sailing vessels you will find there are small dingies, and these only in a few resorts, like Varadero, meant for tourists to toodle around in. And of course, large fully-crewed sailing boats which take groups of tourists out, these likewise berthed only at resorts. Any Cuban who owns a boat, it will not be a sailboat; it will be a motorized vessel for fishing. These of course are berthed primarily in fishing communities around the coast, and are quite elderly.
One would think something like you are asking about would be available in Havana, but it is not as there are very few areas in Cuba where you can do what you want to do. The only place I am aware of where they have 8 - 15 meter sailboats where you can do this is in Trinidad - although there might also be something available out of Santiago de Cuba..

Loved the one about Ireland- cheers mate! Problem is I'm living in England!
Ok- We'll abandon the Cuba idea for the minute.
Where else can you learn to sail properly in the Caribbean? Bear in mind I'd love some pirate looking B**rd with a boat and a hangover.
Thanks guys! I didn't think I'd even get nearly this many replies!! and the comedy!
Steve.

Good luck with the sailing hunt Stephen. You might want to try places like Cayman Islands (expensive though) or even places in the Mediterranean, ie, Greece, or south of France.
My sister sails alot, and when we were in Cuba (first trip), she asked the lifeguards at the beach at Marea del Portillo, if we could take the catamaran out for a sail. Well there was no way. "Oh no, it is too risky out there", (hardly a breeze most times). She just wanted to sail in the Caribbean for once, but luckily she has been back there and to other places, DR, Jamaica, etc. and had plenty of chances to sail.
After all, at the resort we were at, there wasn't alot for the lifeguards to do, so it would have been like taking their jobs away from them. On another trip to same area, I did go out with a friend and we went on catamaran (no wind), so we just snorkeled and waited for the wind to come up.
I doubt very much you will find a place in Cuba that 'gives sailing lessons', but there are plenty of other 'fish in the sea'.
