Any thoughts if having tickets and visa already purchased would help being "grandfathered" in should the unlikely return to the previous travel restrictions from the US?

Who cares... When are you going down next. Grandfathered in, depends on the supreme court in the U.S. Assuming you are American.

Go like all the Americans used to go. Through other countries like Canada and Mexico.

Why am i even responding to you. You seem to be trolling or are naive.

When you only get 2 weeks vacation, going through Mexico PLUS travelling through Havana is a major pain in the butt that I would rather avoid.

Trump will grandfather nobody, sorry about that. The good news is you can easily go non-stop from dozen of countries in Latin America, Caribbean plus Canada with no restrictions. We have been doing it for over twenty years, usually through Mexico.

I agree with smilecu - if Trump changes the rukes, he is not going to make exceptions for those who have already bought tickets.

And the airlines could say that complying with OFAC rules is not their problem.

I think that Trump is unlikely to place restrictions in those visiting family. Say that is why you are travelling and you should be fine.

as indicated above certainly no "grandfathering" and air tickets would have to be refunded as I doubt so many carriers would continue to offer service depending on how difficult he would make it to go...lying about visiting family does not sound smart at all.

for most in US that will add at least a couple of days onto the trip and put you overnight in places you don't even want to go. For most spending time and money to stay in these places that are not your destination are not desirable. Sure it can be done but guess it also depends on how much you want to go.

The majority of those flying direct always used to be those visiting family - they will continue flying and I suspect the airlines will be happy to continue to carry them. If not, the charter airlines will come back.

I agree with the Beard in that claiming a family visit is a good tactic were the restrictions once again in place. tho one has to be prepared to show some sort of proof of family, like a cert. of marriage to a Cuban. if he/she looked like a gringo(a). I had to show such a doc. when first traveling on a family visit.
When I used to travel thru Nassau before my family visits (in my case real family due to a marriage) I never had to overnight in that hideous city.
