I've always noticed that the airport rates are crap, compared to the Metropolitano Bank in town. trap; KY

Have you ever done the math how much worse the rate of money changers at other international airports is compared to downtown?
It may not be the full 5%, but at some (incl. in quite 'free' countries) it ain't far from it.
What I wanted to express is that this is not a scam like in employees freelancing to defraud tourists, as surmised by #1; obviously, however, these scams do exist, too. I'm the last to defend a totalitarian scumbag regime as that one.

Exactly - none remains in the baggage claim area. The rate at the airport around April 10 was about 1.1315 CUC to the Euro, at the downtown Cadeca it was about 1.19.

Caz #14, been there and did that, reason I asked was OP did not state actual $ which is what counts.
Cab from airport to downtown is around $20 and food depends on where you go.
With all due respect to Suricatta -- I'd sure like to have this information confirmed by a few more people.
David, you're going soon? If you are flying into Havana, will you check it out for us?

Thanks David.
If Cuba has indeed changed their policy of keeping all CADECAs equal, then this is yet another nail in their tourism coffin...
Cheers,
Terry

Oh for God’s sake get over yourself/selves. There you are weeping and moaning about Cuba not being run to your satisfaction (and, of course the awful possibility of being ripped off by those devious locals) while the world goes on without you... Two things. 1) the Cuban government is just that: a government. It can do whatever it likes in its own interests; that’s what governments do. This is a simple fact, so please don’t start about Fidel being particularly wonderful or awful. 2) Your financial contribution as an independent traveller means next to nothing: it’s the income from package tourists which matters to Cuba, and package tourists are certainly not going to be bothered by ‘losing’ five bucks in a hundred – they’d spend that on an extra mojito. The inability to imagine a world (and a Cuba) in which you and your holidays aren't right at the very centre is one of the most depressing aspects of this self-obsessed board.
