Hello everyone

I read a lot here about hurricanes in september in Cuba, discussions how big the chance is that one hits, that the weather could be quite bad in september and so on. But I did not find useful information what to do if one hits.

As far as I see, there are two options: sit out or leave. Since we will be travelling with a toddler, sitting out could be quite demanding... So how about the leaving option?

Since a hurricane is known several days before it hits and Cuba is quite big, is it easy to get a plane to the other end of Cuba and continue enyojing the vacation? Or is it not known ahead where exactly it will hit?

Best regs, Adim

I sat out Wilma in Havana which didn't make a direct hit but kept us casa bound for 3 or 4 days....If you are in a Hotel in the path of the hurricane they will evacuate you to a safe place. Cuba is well prepared and as you say you will have a fair bit of notice....bring lots of diapers and stock up on things well in advance like bottled water and rum because they shut everything down long before the hurricane arrives.... I thought it was a bit too early....in our case stores were closing down on wednesday and the hurricane didn't arrive til Monday am in the night. With any luck at all, you'll never see one.

I also would recommend sitting it out, because in the first place, no one can tell a couple of days in advance where a particular hurricane will hit. If you are evacuated because your hotel is in the path of a hurricane, you will be evacuated to another resort, most likely one a few hours away on the opposite coast. And it will likely be far more comfortable than getting stuck in an airport--which is what might well happen if you try to fly out.

I was in Havana in the days right before Wilma came in. I changed my plans just slightly and took the bus out to Santa Clara a few days early. I wound up missing almost all of the hurricane weather. I did lose one day to rain and a power outage when I left Santa Clara for Trinidad 3 days later but it was certainly not a hassle. I wouldnt want to try flying in the face of an incoming hurricane though.
