sorry Candy but plenty of "chubby" Cubans walking too!!!!!
First stayed there 10 or so years ago and most recently only a few months ago so seen a lot of changes since then - good and bad. Still think it outranks Baracoa.
I think by the last day on saturday, there might have just been an award thingy going on at the theatre along with the giant music, kids carnival and food bash towards the water. We did talk to some film dude from Havana that said something also about a lack of film stuff compared to the partying it up stuff. Anyway, I got a taste of it and it was interesting to see Gibara in a different light.
I took a long walk one day past the olympic pool to the outer town limits and back along some dirt roads. Gibara is really not that big and with 3 Cubanacan hotels now operating in town, it is definitely on it's way to being perceived as a hot tourist trail destination. There still seems to be alot of waterfront space for development which I am sure will happen. Hopefully all of this will improve the average Gibarian life.
I must say, that with all of these things going on, the level of hustling on the street by anyone for anything was refreshingly at a bare minimum. Gibara could be a very different place in the not so distant future though. Let's hope not.
In post #4, some celerities at the hotel
should be "some celebrities at the hotel"
