hi. i know this is a fairly well-trodden topic, but i'm trying to get a general sense of how nosy the US customs folks are in nassau these days.
i haven't been to cuba since 2000, and never via nassau, and i keep reading about how the US is cracking down harder and harder on travel to cuba, so i'm looking to hear from americans who have gone through nassau in the last year or so and can tell me what the level of scrutiny was like.
i'm also wondering if staying over in nassau to "launder" one's trip is necessary if one wants to minimize risk, or if the nassau airport is laid out such that one could come off the cubana flight, go to a different part of the airport for an hour or two, and walk up to US customs as if coming in from the street rather than from a connecting flight.
thanks very much,
an

I haven't been thru Nassau since May of 2006, and won't be going anymore to Cuba, but I disagree with #2. I have been thru Nassau about 28 times since '93, and never a problem. The last few times there was only one individual serving as both Immigration and Customs, and as I've mentioned before, sometimes that person seemed so bored that he/she was in danger of falling off the chair. Yes, one can wait for the next flight anywhere in the airport, away from the building from which the US flight leaves. The later your US flight leaves the better, since that separates you with a nice cushion of more hours from the incoming Cuban flight. I have never had any problems with Nassau and Customs. My experience has always been like trap's............the customs guys were all but nodding off.
I know of no one who has ever reported any problem with customs and Nassau. All one ever hears about there being problems is speculation and conjecture.
Since you have declared yourself to be someone who hates Cuba and will never visit again, why do you want to post on a forum like this one, fredsanford?

Crackdown? My Arse! (His arse, your arse, it's just arse.)
We're overdue for another crackdown hoe-down, no?

What made the mendacity-in-Nassau trip (busted for US Code 18, Sec. 1001? Nah, slim chance) relaxing for me was the fact there were no Customs to contend with; after passing the combination Customs/Immigration prole it was clear sailing into the departure lounge. Fred: more relaxing would be good here. You know that tension is a heart stopper. Trap: Oz
