Dear Lonely Planets,
please apolognize I do not really know where to post this, so you also can find it on the Mexico branch.
my friend and her boyfriend planing a holiday at the carebeen sea. Now they have two options and do not know which one to choose. Mexico (caribic side) or Cuba? They are both 90 % beach lovers and 10 % culture lovers. It would be nice to get some ideas which one you would choose.
Thank you very much for your ideas, happy travelling and kind regards
Inge

If they're 90% beach lovers they should do Mexico.
Cuba is a lot more work and probably more expensive, and Mexico's Caribean/Yucutan beaches are great.

Woah huge question, the countries are in many ways vastly different. Dont your friends have any preferences about where they want to go? Mex is easier to travel around and well..cheaper, and possibly while they're there they could incorporate some of the ruins or colonial towns. But cuba is also excellent, just v different... maybe they should do a bit more research on the web and look at some of the places to decide which way they feel a tendency to.

No apologies are needed. It is THE good question.
From Canada, at least, the options of Cuba, Mexico and the Dominican Republic present themselves. All are about equal in all aspects including value for money. The major difference is the attitude of a communist government which simply doesn't care about its people or its visitors. You are a walkinf ATM in Cuba - period!
I'll now repeat for the umpteenth time: Unless you have compelling family, business or personal reasons to visit Cuba - DON'T !!

I've been to both Cuba and Mexico. In my opinion the beaches are great in both places. Cuba's is certainly much safer than Mexico but Mexico has the better selection of food. I do feel that on the whole the food is Cuba is cleaner.
As for caring for it's people Mexico really doesn't have a great record either. .
