Dear all,

it is terrible to hear what happened to Cuba. I hope that Irma did not cause any vicitims!

We were planing to backpack through Cuba starting in 18 December 2017 for three weeks. Now, Irma hit Cuba and we are considering to step back from our plan of traveling to Cuba. We did not book anything yet. What are your experiences and expectations?

Thanks for advise!

Daniel

Hard to tell at what pace tourist infrastructure will be rebuilt or exactly what shape certain destinations will be by December.

As long as you stay away from the north shore cayo resort areas, then I am sure you'd be fine in December. By back-packing, I would guess that you are suggesting that you wouldn't be at resorts anyways. I am sure by then, you will be able to decide, by researching, which towns should be avoided, if any. Tourism is big for the Cuban economy, they will work diligently at restoring what is needed to facilitate that.

I have more or less the same question but my plan was to go to Cuba at the beginning of October... I really don't want to cancel the trip but at the same time don't want to get there to see everything is destroyed. What would you recommend? Do you think Havana will be fine by then?

I am sure that most of Havana will be fine.

5 out of the 7 power plants were damaged and are down. Although info is not clear, some have been able to get back online. Others may take quite some time.
