Hi all,

Only 3 days to go before jetting off to Cuba. Thanks to all for previous advice re: Vinales to Cayo Las Brujas. Have amended our trip to include an overnight en route...

So now we just need to book a rental car but all the online deals we keep finding don't mention anything about insurance (only liability cover for accidental damage/theft). What's the score with this please?

Thanks in advance!

The car rentla insurance terminolgy is somewhat confusing in Cuba.

Your basic rental fee includes basic liability coverage - but a deposit is required for any damage to the car, and upon returning the car you can be "charged" (deducted from the deposit) for any small damage that you picked up - and believe you me in Cuba it is very easy-easy to pickup small damage.

There is "extra" insurance whioch basically covers the small damage, which is a added daily fee.

Note, ONLY the driver(s) registered on the contract are permitted to drive the car (or all inurance is void) and additional drivers, and/or added Cuban driver is a additional daily fee.

The confusion comes from some Cuban rental car companies calling the basic insurance "full insurance" (which is not true, and the added coverage is usually called "extra insurance".

It is advisable never to drive while drunk - since intoxification in the case of a accident cancel any/all insurance as well.

Have a great trip !

Other than the above stated insurance issues and possible very long visits to Cuban prisons, it is generally not advisable to drive drunk anywhere in the world.

Nash Travel (a Canadian company) is advertising Transtur car rental in Miramar that includes the insurance. You could check and see if you have to do this through Nash, or if you could do it on your own with Transtur. Very reasonable rates. Car rental.
