Its normal in Canada to work to 65 or later to be honest. Most people won't even have enough saved up at 65 for retirement here. Incomes don't line up with the cost of living very well. (Alberta is the exception to this where there are plenty of high incomes and low cost of living). There is some suggestion that the average Canadian retires at 62. I'd be pretty confident in suggesting that statistic is skewed in some way. (Atleast in Ontario) I have no idea nationwide.

For many people they just like working. My dad has worked well past 65 as well. I'd say its the norm.

Thanks for that Canadian info.
I know many people here in Oz who say that they can't afford to stop working but are really building up a nest egg that will outsee their lives. I guess their kids will be happy about that. Other keep working because they are afraid they won't cope psychologically.
Mind you we all have different types of interests - living permanently or semi permanently in Cuba would drive me bananas on so many levels.

I'm tempted to say more but won't. I'm pretty open because i don't care what people think. I do stop short when it comes to revealing anything to do with my $$$$$.

What i will say.....

The keeping busy part is very important to me. I need a reason to get out of bed even if it is only to tend to my garden. I plan on doing some experimenting. I know myself, quite well. Doing nothing would be a disaster, for me. I don't want everyday to be a weekend. My wife is the same way. She plans on working when we are in Cuba. Certainly, not for the money.

I want my wife to be financially comfortable, if something happens to me. That has been achieved. She won't lack for anything, including helping family. She is much younger than me. And, I still enjoy my work. I'm surprised i haven't burned out, yet. It's a pretty stressful occupation.

Everybody is different and handle retirement differently.

PS... If after a couple of years we get bored, the option of 6/6, Cuba/Canada is still on the table and doable, so we're not burning any bridges.
