White Water Rafting --Warning, please read !!Country forums / Central America / Honduras
Warning to other tourists interested in white water rafting the Rio Cangrejal with the company Jungle River Tours. A friend of mine lost his life while taking part in a 1/2 day rafting excursion with Jungle River Tours. The accident occurred while the river was high in a section of the river that was class 5 rapids. (the company advertises trips in class 3-4 rapids!) The location where the accident occurred is known to be extremely dangerous. All other rafting companies avoid this section of the river, especially in high waters as were the conditions that day. The guide put the lives of his tourists at risk and a life was lost. It is not normal practice by the other companies to have tourists on that part of the river nor in class 5 rapids! Unfortunately, it seems this company more commonly takes these risks (unbeknownst to tourists) and lives have been lost before. So far, I have learned of two other tourist deaths in the same location with the same company. One death occurred a few months prior, and the other occurred one year ago. Please take caution, tourists should not be brought into class 5 rapids. Unfortunately, it is easy to put your trust in a local company and a guide who should know the river.
Oh no - was this recent? So sorry to hear that. We have our own set-up and do a lot of rafting in Oregon so don't normally choose to in CA but had a wonderful experience with Omega Tours. We were impressed with their guides, high quality equipment, orientation, and attention to detail. The river was really high when we were there and we had a very exciting 1/2 day run but it was clear they'd taken the water level into account when choosing where to put in. I'm sorry for your loss and for your friend's family. qwovadis - he's talking about Honduras so your guide outfits won't be much help. | 1
sorry to hear about your loss. qwovadis is just shooting for 10,000 posts, will answer anything. | 2
qwovadis is just shooting for 10,000 posts, will answer anything..... LOL Safety is a major factor when White Water rafting, in a developing country. Class V for a novice is suicide. Sorry to hear about this as well. A tragedy indeed. | 3
I rafted there recently with Omega....very professional and safety conscious....BUT, it is a serious river...even the lower section that they do the half day trips on. Fell out of the boat twice. | 4
