Weekend in Belize

Country forums / Central America / Belize

Hi everyone,

I'm off to Belize for a week with work, and will have a weekend free in the middle of it. What would you do?

I've already been to most of the big Mayan sites in Central America, so I'm not desperate to see Altun Ha and co. Beach and snorkeling (and maybe diving) is more what I have in mind, though I'm open to anything. Has to be close enough to Belize City to make a weekend trip worthwhile. I've got a reasonable budget to play with.

Any ideas much appreciated!

I'd get a water taxi over to Caye Caulker, but you might also prefer Ambergris Caye. Easy to get to. CC is a bit cheaper, quieter, more laid back than AC. AC has more shops, restaurants, nightlife, tourists, etc. It depends on what you want.

You can dive or snorkel from both islands.

Yes, Caulker or San Pedro. That's the ticket. You will be glad to get out of Belize City.

Caye Caulker! Check Raggamuffins web site. they have snorkeling day trips and sunset cruises. Senor Chocolate offers manatee tours. Rent a kayak. Hang out at Lazy Lizard on the split. Hotel Miramar affords a perfect vantage point over the ocean and the middle of the main drag.

You can hop over to Abomigrease Caye if you must, but I bet youll return on the next water taxi; that is unless you cant endure the 2 hours, and in desperation are forced to take your own life.

check out haminasi ...they have a great dive set up, everything taken care of, great boats professional. hotel that caters to divers. Not on Amberg. Caye, mainland but well worth it.

Certainly more trouble to get to Hamanasi, even though it is great.. Plane or bus to Dangriga, then van or shuttle or bus to Hopkins, then taxi or walk to Hamanasi. . As compared to 45 minutes water taxi to Caye Caulker. We were one of those people Eddy describes--went over to San Pedro from CC, had lunch at Palapa Bar, which is nice, and scuttled right back on the next boat to CC.

On Abomigrease we killed time at a locals bar on the back streets by a swamp, drinking beers and listening to mexican music.
