I plan a trip to Guatemala this December, this time from Belize to Livingstone, Quiriga,Coban,Huehuetenango ,Lago de Atitlan, but I am concerned about the weather, will it be too cold to swim in Semuc Champey,or what about at night since I mostly stay in hostels and they probably don t have heating?
Huehue and Coban can be chilly anytime, Coban gets rain even in the dry season. The hotels have blankets, few have heaters, it is the tropics. Champey is usually warm enough to enjoy the river pools-rain can make it less than ideal swimming weather. | 1
When we were in Guatemala in December, we went swimming in Semuc. It was warm and sunny. We had some rain in and around Coban. The coldest places were Todos Santos and Xela. Hotels do provide blankets and we were okay although we never really got warm in our room in Todos Santos unless we were under the blankets. Overall though the weather was nice. At the lake it was warm and sunny. | 2
Semuc is a much lower elevation than Coban itself. We just came back from an October visit and found Coban to be a little chilly, but Semuc was pleasant as could be. | 3
Semuc Champey water was just right 2 yr ago February. Higher elevations might necessitate bed cover and fleece jacket. Inquire with hotel desk for blanket before check in but all will have. One time I copped a blanket at a cheap hotel in caye caulker belize during anomalous weather period. | 4
Have traveled all over Guatemala at the Christmas time. Was able to swim days and at night wore layers to bed and also carried campers heat packs which you tear open and throw into your bed. Get at any camping supply place or order on line. | 5
