Tikal Camping

Country forums / Central America / Guatemala

Hi - I have a couple of questions to anyone who has recently been to Tikal:

  1. There are some posts from 2012 that state if you buy your ticket after 3pm, you can use this on the following day too. Is this still valid?
  2. I know that the Tikal Jungle Inn provides tents for camping for a minimum of 2 nights. But since I am travelling solo only for one night, there are some old posts stating that it is possible to rent hammocks and mosquito nets. Has only recently been able to do this?

Thank you

Not sure about the ticket. That policy seems to change a lot. When we were there (March 2014) we were told we could only buy 3 kinds of tickets : sunrise (4 am to 8 am), day (6 am to 6pm) and sunset (4 pm to 8 pm).

There is a general campground in Tikal, separate from the hotels (just ask at the information desk). You can camp there with your own tent (they put a tent up for us in 2012 but no longer in 2014, we were there last in March). They will still put up a hammock for you (Q85) though. It is actually quite comfortable. There is a thick sheet that goes around the hammock to keep bugs out and it kind of makes it like a tent although you sleep in a hammock.

I thought it was the Jaguar Inn that has the tents. Not many though and you can't book them in advance (Q120).

Yea the camping area is basically next to the soccer pitch, across from the 3 lodges, and the parking lot. The Information Desk is between this and the main entrance which you can only walk in.

I think it was Jaguar Inn that rents tents, and you set up right there on their private hotel property around the cabins, which also may allow you to use the bathrooms/showers, check their website.

Try your best to spend 2 nights at the park, it's well worth it.
