Quetzaltenango to Nebaj

Country forums / Central America / Guatemala

Which is better route and how can I get it by public transport (time - conections)?
1.- Xela - Huehue - Sacapulas - Nebaj
2.- Xela - Santa Cruz del Quiche - Sacapulas - Nebaj
Any recommendations for interesting stop-over?
Thanks in advance

I've done both routes and both have a lot to offer. Going by public transport, they're basically around the same amount of time overall, with #1 maybe being an hour or two faster, and slightly easier overall.

As for stopovers, I'm a big fan of Aguacatan between Huehue and Xela. There's a nice, comfy hotel there called "Royal (something... let me look for the name)," basically the nicest one in town at a budget hotel price. One thing to consider might be: when are you traveling? If a town fiesta is taking place in Huehue or Quiche during that time, it would be a fantastic chance to stop by. LMK when you're going and I could see if I had any recommendations.

Plenty of camionetas (chicken buses) going from Xela to Huehue, then from there you can get either camionetas or – as I did – vans going to either Aguacatan or straight through to Sacapulas, then another connection to transport from there to Nebaj.

Hope you have plenty of time to spend in the Triangle, it's one of those areas that rewards a relaxing, slow-paced week of hiking and wandering. The Chajul fiesta's coming up in the first week of January, and it's a good'un.

I will go to Guatemala next week, and from Xela on November 11.
