Places to Stay on Ometepe Island/ Info about Ferry during Christmas time

Country forums / Central America / Nicaragua

Hi there. Thank you for all the valuable information on this post. Can anyone recommend lodging on Ometepe? Should we try to stay on different parts of the island or just in 1 place when we visit?

Also, does anyone know how the ferry will run on December 26th?
Thank you.

The ferry will run December 26. I believe it even runs December 25.

We have stayed in Moyogalpa, Charco Verde and Balgue.

It depends on what you will be doing, how long you are staying on Ometepe, how you are getting around (bus, taxi, scooter rental...) and your budget. If you are climbing Concepcion you have to stay in Moyogalpa (you will find guides there) the night before as you will leave early. Look at Dona Chilo for a budget option. Or Hospedaje Soma, just outside the village.

If you are climbing Maderas you need to be in Balgue, Santa Cruz or Merida the night before. In Balgue we like Asi Es Mi Tierra, in Merida look at Hacienda Merida, La Omaja, Finca Mystica. Balgue and Merida are nice villages. Balgue is not too far from Ojo de Agua, kayaking... Merida is close to the San Ramon waterfall and kayaking...

Playa Santo Domino and Santa Cruz are central so good for exploring. I heard good things about Finca del Sol, Totoco, Xalli, Linda Guest house. We also like the hotels at Charco Verde.

Hi @taba_ur_7983 :)

I stayed at Hacienda Merida on Ometepe & I had an amazing experience. The hostel has won awards for sustainability, the staff was extremely helpful, & I met so many cool people there. I hiked Maderas volcano one day (it was really difficult but totally worth it)! Hacienda Merida hostel has a beautiful dock where you can relax & watch the sunset or take out kayaks on the lake. They also serve delicious, healthy food for fairly reasonable. The breakfast buffet is really good. I definitely recommend staying at Hacienda Merida- I have more info about the hostel on my page: http://www.themindfulexplorer.com/central-america.html. I only stayed at the one lodge on the island. Depending on how much time you plan on spending on Ometepe, it could be worth checking out another area. But you can't go wrong spending your time at Hacienda Merida :)

I also enjoyed my stay at Hacienda Merida. It is not easy to get to. You would either have to hire a driver in town or contact the owner. He can probably set something up for you.

All buses from Moyogalpa go to Altagracia first. From Altagracia there is a bus to Merida 5 times a day. On Sundays there are hardly any buses. I think a taxi from Moyogalpa to Merida will be $30-35.

Agree with #3....depends what you want to see and do on the island.

I stayed at Soma in Moyogalpa ..a good base for climbing, and easy enough to get to other parts of the island, by bike, bus or car (if you want to do activities like riding or kayaking they will pick you up)

I stayed in Moyagalpa and Altagracia, and various places in the Baigue to Playa Santa Cruz area. My favorite was Albergue Ecologico el Porvenir. There are ancient petroglyphs scattered around the grounds of the farm, and this is one of the 2 places that has a direct trail up to the Volcan Maderas. The other one is Finca Magdalena, closer to Baigue.
