Nicaragua is warm, small, cheap, interesting. Colombia is huge, cool except on the coast and jungles, very interesting and cheap. With two and a half weeks, I would do a week in Nicaragua and the rest in Colombia. Hiking around, unarmed, in wilderness areas is dangerous, especially alone and more so in Colombia.

Not if you carry a machete!

Hiking around "armed" is in definitely more dangerous than anything. If some bandits stop you and politely request your belongings, you give them your iDevice, EOS.
