Could you please tell us the best period to avoid mosquitoes bit in Panama in addition with location (it seems that pacific coast is better from this point of view)?
How about using anti-bug spray, covering up your skin at dusk and (if you want) taking anti-malarials? If you are that worried about getting mosquito bites, then you won't be able to go anywhere in the tropics! (and not only). | 1
Thanks lucapal (molto gracie) very useful comment, tough... | 2
Its the tropics, its also depends where you are, you should be more worried about No See Ums on the beaches on the caribe side, as well as Dengue Fever outbreaks in the rainy season. Mozzies are worst at sunset, wear repellant and cover up. Why are you going to Panama, why Bocas Del Toro? All the guidebooks, Trip Advisor cover the scene there. Trash in San Blas is what it is. | 3
Are there any pristine islands on earth that are not contaminated by the plastic crap floating in the oceans? The problem in Kuna Yala was in my observation that the majority of trash on the islands was not generated there by the Kuna but was just the general debris you see everywhere on every beach worldwide. There may be more in this part of the world being flushed out and down the rivers of the generally untidy Central and South American countries of the region. Next time you are in Panama or Venezuela and you see some slob throw trash on the street figure it going to end up somewhere "pristine". In Costa Rica in anticipation of the rainy season the blocked storm drains in San Jose were cleared of many tons so the streets would not flood. There is a direct correlation between the amount of mosquitoes, dengue and malaria and the amount of man made crap (as long as I am on the subject) strewn about. Especially but not confined to the rainy season. Deet, don't leave home without it. | 4
If you can' t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen! Due to the hot and humid climate, tropical rainforests are breeding grounds for mosquitos and other bugs. Maybe a tropical dry climate (a savanna or desert) is more to your liking? Finland, you got to be joking! In summertime the sky there turns black with clouds of mosquitos! Don' t go there! What you can do against mosquitos: buy deet repellent spray and repellent to burn in your room and good mosquito netting for your bed. Wear long pants and sleeves at dusk and in the evening. | 5
The only way to avoid mosquitoes in Panama is not to go! Seriously, I live on the NC coast and I see more mosquitoes here than I saw in Panama / other CA countries. Of course, if you are hiking in a rainforest or visiting a wet humid area in the early morning or late evening you will need some bug spray or cream. I am allergic to mosquitoes if I get too many bites so I can appreciate your question. I always use the repellant with deet, at least 25 %. I usually carry a couple of bottles with me and bring most of it back. The NO SEE UMS that someone mentioned are really bad in some areas near the coast when the wind is calm. I remember a fellow fisherman from England once in CR whose legs looked like had he had some sort of disease due to infected NO SEE UM bites. Get you some good repellant, long pants, long sleeve shirt and enjoy yourselves. | 6
Once you get off the main street in Bocas the tourists dissapere. The waters are much more pristine than the pacific side. | 7
