Lanquin, Guatemala to San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Country forums / Central America / Guatemala

A friend and I are going to be in Lanquin in Jan of 2016 and want to make our way to Roatan. We will be catching a flight from San Pedro Sula to Roatan but need to get to San Pedro Sula! The only way i seem to find is by taking a bus "back" to GC and on from there towards Copan. We would rather not go that route as it seems to belonged than by going "north" towards Puerto Barrios then on to the border from there, but I can't seem to find any information for that route. Looking for some help, please :)

Haven't done it myself, but this thread might be useful. Not sure if the shuttle is still running, but for a while there was one between Lanquin and Rio Dulce.

From there, I think there is a shuttle that goes from Rio Dulce through Puerto Barrios, all the way to La Ceiba. Otherwise, plenty of buses from RD to PB and then to Omoa or SPS, etc.

Yeah, make your way to Dulce and take a boat to LIvinston, great ride, then to PB and onto Omoa for the night, cool little town.

The riverboat ride down Rio Dulce gorge is fan-tastic. I would go that way and spend a night each in RD and Livingston then proceed like joe said. You didnt mention how much time you have allocated for this transition, nor your budgetary preferences.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the tips.
Unfortunately we have so little time :(
we would prefer something cheap, but are willing to pay a little more if it gets us sooner.
We unfortunately won't be able to get to Livingston due to time restraints. I wish we did, I hear its amazing

Maybe there's a way to get from Lanquin to Puerto Barrios? And then PD on to San Pedro Sula?
Thank you enroute, looks like you may have found us a way but we need to go the OTHER direction...

We would like to leave Lanquin super early and get to SPS the same day...am I out of my mind to think its possible???

Actually, the same shuttle operates in both directions (at least it should be currently operating... no confirmation on that). AFAIK there are no direct connections to PB.

It may be possible to make it in the same day, with a combination of shuttles and public transport, but this is not really a region where you can count on timely transport connections.

Check out this thread, especially the second and third posts. He suggests that just making it to El Estor will take 8 hours from Lanquin, and much more to Puerto Barrios. Getting from PB after dark just doesn't sound like a great idea. You may have to push everything back by a day or sacrifice a destination... I just wouldn't count on anything in this case because it's an area where a an 8-hour trip can easily turn into 10, 11, 12 hours.

I dont think you can make that trip in one day, your looking at a night somewhere, Dulce or Livingston would be my pick, PB looked like a pit to me.

Hey siglo, sitting here by the pool at Don Muncho in Pana, nice tip. Any place you prefer for dinner?

Well, I'm probably not the best one to ask since I go for the veg places. I used to like Bombay Cafe before it closed a couple years ago. I do love Cafe Kitsch, way up Santander kind of past the Primavera hotel, on the right-hand side... they've got some tables out front. Used to be all veg but now it's half-vegetarian/half-omnivore, some creative stuff there.

Also a fan of Chinitas in that other little cluster of restaurants and shops on the left-hand side of Santander (going towards the main road). The owner is Malaysian and brings some nice variety to town... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g292008-d1811504-Reviews-Chinitas-Panajachel_Lake_Atitlan_Solola_Department_Western_Highlands.html

Thanks dude, will check it out.

I stayed a night in Puerto Barrios. Hotel Europa. It was near the port and I walked back and forth after dark. Copped some grub, some kind of meat empanada-like doo-dads at a street joint & had some beers with Antonio.

Just an update: instead of leaving Guatemala from Lanquin, we will leave from Antigua. There is a bus from Antigua to La Ceiba, which is where we wanted to end up. Long and expensive, but doable!
Thanks for all the tips!!!
