hostels in city of PuntarenasCountry forums / Central America / Costa Rica
Howdy all. I will be traveling for two weeks in October from Managua, NI to visit my cousin who lives in Cartago. My entire trip appears to have been finalized, with the exception of lodging for one night in the city of Puntarenas. I know that this isn't the most desirable city for extraños, but I would like to be able to visit an urban beach for an overnight on my journey. I cannot find any hostels, or shared accommodations in Puntarenas. The cheapest option I could find was a hotel room or cabina for around $35 a night. Does anybody have any suggestions for more "budget" friendly accommodations? I realize $35 a night is not much, but when I'm paying $10 a night in a hostel in San Ramon, and $8 a night in a hostel in Managua...I feel that $35 is quite a big difference. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Costa Rica is more expensive than Nicaragua. We did manage to find rooms here and there for $10-15 per person. For double rooms we paid $30-35. That was in 2015. Best to look for a room when you are there. Not every hotel (and certainly not the cheapest ones) has online presence. | 1

Puntarenas is a local favorite and it is on the sea, so not sure why you are comparing it to Managua or San Ramon... Why are you staying there anyway? | 3
