Honduras - Santa Rosa de Copan

Country forums / Central America / Honduras

Currently i m in playa el tunco, el salvador. is it worth to go to honduras for Santa Rosa de copan and maybe gracias? since i am close to honduras i'd like to make a short trip there and then head to nicaragua. any suggestions for, say 5 days in honduras? i'd like to stay close to the el salvador border. i also want to skip the copan ruins.

Santa Rosa isn't a bad little city...but then again nothing special. You could stop there a night or two on your way to Gracias spend a couple of days there, and then head on down la Ruta Lenca to La Esperanza for connecting onward to Marcala and crossing back in to El Salvador for Perquin, or onward to Tegucigalpa for picking up a bus to Nicaragua.

If you're not looking to be on the move so much, just head for Tegus and take a side-tour back up to Comayagua; another neat little city like Santa Rosa - again not a lot to do but certainly more convenient for heading to Nicaragua.

Closing of the borders to food imports (and people/other things) happened within 48-hours of the initial conflict with Zelaya's removal, and again briefly in the week's that followed. It didn't work; more so that parts of neighboring El Salvador and Guatemala rallied to the cause because they so needed Honduras food exports.

At this point things have quieted down again according to latest reports from my local contacts in the capital - for real, and not just because Honduras has disappeared from global headlines and the radar of TT broadcasters.

Just keep your wits about you in Tegucigalpa when passing through to change buses; it's not really a city one spends much time in even under the best conditions. Sounds like you'll be traveling through sooner than later, though there will probably be more problems arise towards mid-to-late November when the country has their national presidential elections.

Enjoy Honduras! It's my fav CA country with or without the problems ~
