Help with a surfing trip

Country forums / Central America / Nicaragua

I am trying to plan a surfing trip for my boyfriend to Nicaragua in June for two weeks to celebrate his graduation. Where are the best spots to go for beginner surfers? (Two guys that have gone about 10 times in small to medium waves).
IS it best to book a surf camp or is it better to rent a car and and find a cheap place once they are there?
Any recommendations on surf camps?? OR any camps to avoid?
Also I want to know how safe it is for experienced backpackers, of if there is anything that is currently going on that they should be aware.

Thanks,

From overly nice girlfriend

There's really no need to pay for an expensive surf camp. Just find a cheap place to stay on the beach and rent a board. Casa Oro in SJDS offers daily trips to Playa Maderas and they offer surf lessons too. There are places to stay on Playa Maderas. Matilda's (in the MOON book) is awesome. Not the best surfing in the world, but decent waves and a nice place.

I agree that Casa Oro in San Juan Del Sur has set themselves up as a surfing hostel. Nice little beach side town, with some touristy beach side restaurants added in. Oro does day trips to local surf destinations and the such.
