Wonderful classic from 1936 is Louis Adamic's The House in Antigua.

If you could have only one book about the Mayans it would have to be:
The Ancient Maya by Sylvanus Morley

I got my copy at the bookstore in front of Café Condesa in Antigua.

#2, that's the same as "The Ancient Maya" by Sharer and Traxler. Your edition is probably in the neighborhood of 40 years old...the following edition was co-authored by Morley and Robert Sharer, and after Morley's death Sharer inherited the senior authorship.

A lot has changed in Maya scholarship since Morley's time; while he was a very insightful archaeologist, most of his work is more valuable these days for providing an intellectual history of Maya archaeology, rather than much useable insight into the ancient Maya themselves.

For the more dedicated, I would add:

"Reading Maya Art" by Andrea Stone and Marc Zender

and

"Reading the Maya Glyphs" by Michael Coe and Mark Van Stone

There are also some excellent catalogs of Maya art, which are great for perusing but definitely not the best travel companions. Notables include:

"The Blood of Kings" by Linda Schele and Mary Ellen Miller

"Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea" by Stephen Houston and Daniel Finamore

"Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya" by Simon Martin and Marry Ellen Miller

Everything by Linda Schele is entertaining and solid scholarship. David Stuart is another must read Mayanist, and he has written the best 2012-related book available, IMO:

The Order of Days: The Maya World and the Truth About 2012
http://www.amazon.com/Order-Days-World-Truth-About/dp/0385527268/

He has done much of the research surrounding the glyphs and "prophecies" referenced in 2012 doomsday BS and knows what he's talking about.

Thanks for all the excellent additions, and...

Happy Wednesday!
