Gay couple traveling togetherCountry forums / Central America / Nicaragua
Hi everyone! I'll be making a trip to Nicaragua in January with my boyfriend. We are both seasoned travelers but have not traveled together before. We were chatting tonight and the question came up about how open we can be in Nicaragua. My understanding is that people are reasonably accepting, but we probably shouldn't hold hands or kiss in public. Another concern is lodging. Should we opt for a room with two beds versus one queen sized bed? I welcome any thoughts on the topic! PS It's a shame Lonely Planet gave the old LGBT section of Thorn Tree the ax. It was a great resource for these type of questions. Alas, I digress..
Just respect other cultures norms and they will respect you. | 1
Latino is a macho culture plus strong RC beliefs but they also have good manners and are generally non-intrusive towards foreigners. Visitors should always be respectful.... | 2
Thanks everyone for the input! I understand about respecting other country's cultural beliefs. I've spent a good amount of time in South Asia and my boyfriend has been to around 25 countries. I guess I'm just trying to get a good gauge of where the cultural acceptance is at this point. Acceptance of gays is constantly changing so the climate 10 years ago could be very different than today. | 3
You can"t compare se-asia to latin america , which suffers a lot more from "machismo". Just use common sense and realize that people are much more religious, catholic, baptists, jehova and all this .......Never had any problems asking for a "matrimonio" in a hotel in touristic places like Leon, Granada,SJDS. In more rural places my boyfriend is a friend. | 4
Thanks globaler! My comments about travel experience were in reply to some comments from others that have since been deleted. My point was that we are not new to adapting to the varying cultures wherever we travel, but it would be helpful to understand the nuances of that culture where we are going, so thank you for your thoughts. I'm not too sure of our plans yet. We'll likely research places we'd like to see and then just play it by ear. Not too big on creating an itinerary. I'll send you a PM at some point if we have more specific questions. Cheers! | 5
