Diving in the Bay islands in December

My husband and I are planning a trip to Honduras to mainly dive this December. We are trying to decide which diving shop/place to use. We are looking for a reliable company with basic accommodation and far from the crowds.

On my list I have:

-Captain's Morgan dive center on Jewel Caye (Utila). My question: it seems to be very quiet, but they cannot promise how many dives we will be able to do (maybe just 2) we would like 3-4 every day for a week.

-We are also looking at the Cayos Cochinos: Caribik or Plantation Beach resort?

Any advice will help!

PS: can we reserve plane tickets from San Pedro de Sula to Ceiba (or even Utila) ahead of time, or does it have to be done form the airport there? Can't contact the company flying there.

We dove with Subway Scuba and Anthony's and both were fine. I'd recommend going to scuba board forum to get specific suggestions about diving.

you should book tickets and not at the airport for the season from nov to mar. this is pek season for diving.

I would strongly recomend CoCo View on Roatan. Not only is it away from the crowds, they include unlimited shore diving in thier price. Typically they run you out for a boat dive, then give you the option of Jumping off near the resort on the way back. You cruise the wall shallow poop up outside the resturant and walk accross the key to the equipment area.

We did 6 dives ever day that way including a lot of Dawn and Night dives. For serious diving no location in the Bay Islands comes close.

Although this news has been awhile regarding Coco View dive Resort, I personally will not go with them.

Once a dive company has serious accidents attached to their name, I wont consider them even if they had drastic replaced everyone and every piece of equipment. Too many to choose from in my book.

Tropical Island Divers are located at Marble Hill Farms, five minutes on the dirt road to Camp Bay. they have a great operation and three private casitas that overlook the north shore. the dive spots on this end of the island are spectacular, especially Morat Wall. there is the Mangrove Forest that is close by and they will take you on a short tour on the way. Pigeon Cay is one of the favorite spots with a nice wall as well. since its not on the west end of the island so you won't find any crowds. they also have a restaurant and rent kayaks, if you want to do a bit of exploring on your own. the snorkeling is great and there is a restaurant in Camp Bay over the water that has a marine sanctuary. conchs, lobsters and they save turtles that are caught by the poachers.

I am still looking! Marble Hill Farms seems neat! But I am worried about the variety of the dives as their dives are only 5-10 minutes from shore. It must be the same kind of dives all the time.

I have been looking at Deep Blue Resort on Utila. Any comments about them?

I haven't dived from Marble Hill Farms but close to shore and close together in that part of the world doesn't necessarily mean all the same kind of dives all the time. Diving on the north coast of Guanaja, all within 5-10 minutes of the Island House dock, was incredibly varied - pinnacles, swim-throughs, eel gardens, shallow reefs interspersed with sand, the works.

On Utila we stayed at the Lighthouse and I dove with Alton's - a perfect combination for me. We like that area near the bridge which is close enough to the center of town but far enough away to be quieter. The best snorkeling and flyfishing we've found is out past the old airport, there's a decent beach out there (you pay a few bucks for the privilege), and our favorite restaurant, RJ's Barbecue, is practically across the street. This summer we'll be in Guatemala for a few weeks and then we're splitting our 2 weeks of island time between Camp Bay Beach Lodge and Hobbie's Hideaway. Good luck!
