Diving & Beach Holiday in August?

Country forums / Central America / Costa Rica

I know that it's mid-hurricane season, and I know that it's kinda a crap shoot as to if you will get hit with one, though from what i've read here, it's rather unlikely..

But my parents have gifted me their timeshare exchange week, and i'm having a tough time narrowing down my options.. (at this point I am looking at Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman..) My only real requirements are (first, of course) that there is a property for the time share exchange, good diving, reasonable food/entertainment costs (i.e. no more than what it costs in the US), and that airfare is not too high.. my understanding it that airfare from the US to Belize or Costa Rica will be cheaper than one of the Caribbean islands.. This isn't my normal mode of traveling, in that i tend to go to more budget off the beaten path destinations, so I'm at a bit of a loss when it comes to figuring this whole thing out..

Anyways, I was wondering how the visibility and other dive conditions are in August. There are seven properties to choose from, 3 in Puntarenas and 4 in Guanacaste... I don't really know much about either area, so any information that would help narrow down the options would be great!

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks!
Tina

Diving overall in Costa Rica does not compare to Belize or the Caymans.

The best diving in CR is Isla Coco, Live board only, as its protected island and its not cheap, abour $300 day.

Guanacaste would be you best bet for access to decent diving, via Playa Coca, Flamingo or Tamarindo, to Catalina Islands or Bat Islands, but, its nothing special. The next best diving to the Liveboard in Isla Coco is Drake Bay, way south, and iyts not cheap to stay or dive down there...

Hurricanes never hit and rarely affect the weather in NW CR(Guanecaste) but August is rainy season.

The diving is pretty darn good, but not as good as Belize or Caymens. It is pacific ocean diving, not caribbean coral reef diving.

The best diving in the area is the Catalinas islands just offshore from Flamingo.
