Cheap transport from panama to Costa Rica

Country forums / Central America / Panama

Hey guys just booked a flight into Panama and need to get to Costa Rica. I'm backpacking so would love to know cheap transportation...and any accommodation in panama for one night near the airport? Cheers.

Where in Costa Rica do you need to be, and why the rush?

You can cross the CR border on the Caribe side via Sixoala near Bocas Del Toro, and also via the Pan Am that connects the capitals on the Pacific side. Tica Bus is the easiest, but you could local bus to border, or David, then from CR Border, get a bus to at least San Isidro de General or possibly Palmar Sur/Norte.

But where are you going in CR? If San Jose, Tica bus, a 17-19 hour journey.

I am flying into panama on the 12th and need to prove that I'm leaving the country so I need a bus pass to show them and also to take me from panama airport to palmar nortre airport which is where I can start my woofing experience as I have just been offered a spot. I need to get there ASAP and to let them know the time. Thank you for your help.

Then you need to find a way to get someone to buy you a ticket to San Jose CR, and send it to you. What airline are you flying into Panama? it is the airline that enforces the "Onward Travel" prior to boarding, not Immigration once you land. Why are not flying into San Jose CR? There is a direct bus to Palmar Norte, about 7 hours, or a 40 minute $90 flight.

To get to Palmar Norte, would be a long day with a border crossing from Panama City, but the PC to SJ bus I think now goes via Palmar Norte to San Isidro de General, and not via Buenas Aires.

If not, you would get to border, via David, then get a bus to Ciudad Neily, 45 minutes from Frontera, then from there a bus to Palmar Norte/Sur, another 1.5 hours.

But I have not done this from Panama, only CR side...
