Bus from Guatemala Border to Belize

Country forums / Central America / Belize

Has anybody jumped on a San Juan or Linea Dorada direct bus at the Belize side of the Guatemala Border?

I want to get from the Trek Stop (San Jose Succotz) to Chetumal. (Bacalar)

I know people board the Linea Dorada minibus in San Ignacio, even though technically I don't think the Guatemala buses are supposed to stop and pick up/drop off people in Belize. Don't know if they would stop at the Trek Stop. There's a little tour/travel company near the Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio that can probably help you. Amigos Travel I think it's called.

According the Agent: These are Guatemalan bus lines and are not scheduled to stop anywhere in Belize except Belize City.

However, they do stop to let passengers off as they travel through Belize. Dont expect them to stop anywhere to pick up passengers. Any stops in Belize are up to the driver.

You could board in San Ignacio IF the bus stops to let passengers off.

I was thinking of back-tracking to the border and try to jump on there. It was my understanding that the bus stops at the border, everyone gets off and walks through customs, then re-boards on the other side. I was thinking of jumping on when everyone re-boards. Is that possible?

It is frustrating to know the bus that goes to Chetumal will pass in front of my face, sure make my life simple if I could just jump on, no?

If I have to ride a express or local from San Ignacio to BC in time to catch-up with the LD bus at 11:30am what time do I have to leave SI?

When i stayed at the trek stop we shared a cab with other guests to the border, and got the bus from there. People at the Trek Stop will give you all the advice you need.
it's really quick to get to the border, so don't worry about it. Then at the border there's no problem to get a bus.

If you are at the border when the LD bus arrives, you should be able to board for the rest of the trip to Chetumal. I rode the bus about three years ago from Flores to BC and a couple of travelers hopped on at the border. I think they had to pay the full fare (as if they had boarded in Flores). Once the bus arrives, I would not expect you to have any problems if you tell the driver you want to ride to Chetumal and pay the fare.

Linea Dorada and San Juan are Guatemalan owned companies.

As I understand it, Guatemalan bus companies can not offer local bus service within Belize.

You should be able to board when it stops at the border.

If you phone the agent in Belize City they will arrange for the bus to pick you up in Succotz. Probably at the ferry? Actually a taxi to the frontier and a mini bus every half hour on the Guatemala side over the river are more economical and as comfortable. That way you travel at your convenience, as the mini buses go regularly.
