automatic vs. stick/automatic

Country forums / Central America / Costa Rica

subject says it all - what's the preference in CR?

shoot... i meant to say automatic vs. stick/standard. sorry! Anyway - i'm would imagine for passing power and steep inclines it's better to have a stick.... but maybe so much shifting around potholes and such would make the automatic a better ride.

anyone have an overwhelming preference?

Thanks again!

1

I prefer stick, I you are driving through San Jose automatic, if not it doesn't make any difference

2

I was always a stick fan until I got to CR. Once you've looped your way through the mountains and valleys stuck behind the inevitable line of trucks and Coca-Cola lorries a few times you'll be cursing the clutch. I also used to think that Autos couldn't handle real off road conditions but thats just not true of todays shifts.

3

Like BOOMER1 says the modern transmissions and traction control systems will get an auto almost anywhere a lockin manual can go. If you know how to use it somehow the stick seems more fun, but as far as performance and abilities there's no difference.

4

I prefer stick in the mountains, gives better passing dynamics, but that's just me as I've been driving sticks for all my life and have no trouble wiggling it up and down, but I guess auto will do just fine. A stick is not a must in CR

5

automatics are generally more expensive to rent, although with a new car either one will have enough power. it may depend on where you are driving as well.

6

I prefer stick, I feel more in control when I drive off road.

7

I prefer a stick, more power for passing in the mountains, 75% of CR is mountains....

They are getting harder to book, thanks to lame Americans spoiled by automatic transmissions, that now make up the vast majority of renters, a decade ago is more EU people, who drive sticks...

A good 4x4 is a Hyundai Vitara, it has a LOW mode 4x4, for the real muck...

8

There's a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Hyundai Tucson, and a Suzuki Vitara, but no such thing as a Hyundai Vitara.

9

Hi, if is your first time in Costa Rica take automatic because you don't know the coutry and the streets so you need to go slow.

Boomer....Thanks for the correction, and all the vehicles you mention are great too, as is the Kia Sportage.

11

Just bought a Kia Sportage which actually solves this issue because it has a Steptronic transmission allowing you to switch between auto and stick but either way without the clutch. Genius!

12

I prefer stick wherever I am be it Costa Rica or California

13

Kia Sportage is the best 4x4 in the class IMHO....bang for the buck, and a solid car in and out....they have come a long way baby...

14

I learned with manual transmition, drove 17 years with automatic in north america for flat land, last 13 years manual here in CR for small distances, lots of curves, mountain roads and put holes conditions.

15

BOOMER1...I am shocked. Thought you were into vintage jeeps. Do you race old ladies on sundays with your new sissy shifter? My image of you is shattered and hope and I can deal with this disturbing news.

16

bolt action. lever action or automatic i have some of each oh your in the used car department sorry. don

17

Fair comment Scoot. I could play the "I bought it for the girlfriend" card but it wouldn't be strictly true. My last four vehicles have been Jeeps (two Wranglers, two Cherokees) so you could say I'm a fan. And I do still have a Cherokee if thats any mitigation?.
Nah, its just that I wanted to buy new and Jeeps have a terrible residual in CR because the parts and service costs are so high.
Perhaps one day you'll forgive me (if I can only forgive myself!).

20

The epitome of irony. I forgive you number eighteen.

21

#19 should be banned for advertising like that. What was the story there, anyway?

22

I agree. Number 19 should have been banned long ago.

23

#21...I have hung my head in shame for 5 long years but finally I am forgiven. What event could have caused this epiphany?...I simply cannot imagine.....

24

Can I not just once try to spread a little sunshine without being questioned?
How much is a bus pass these days?

25

With the burden of shame lifted I walk forward with lightness in my step....I have to walk of course because I don't have a car.....

26

I have gently used mukluks with low kms on them for sale if you like. I'll even throw in some mitts and ear muffs cause, well, that's just the kind of guy I am.
Not sure if #22 has an issue with that.

27

Hello?...tap tap, is this thing on?
By the way, have everything hooked up, and it works great...thanks.
I have to admit that I found the home movie dvd ( you know the one...bottom of the pile with you, Lady B and neighbors) rather frightening.

28

...Customer Satisfaction is my No.1 motivation......I aim to deliver!.....quality clip smut included....man you gotta admit that was quite some take away haul!

29

Yup, the Kia was so full of goodies that I barely had room to shift gears, not that there was any need to but just the same.

30

...just make sure you don't get anymore uninvited visitors.....I'd hate to think that the DVD of Lady Boomer's group indiscretions might fall into the wrong hands!

31

No worries LB. I've already put it back on the bottom of the disc pile and have it locked away.
Will let you know when the current Girls Gone Wild at SHFWW video is released. Still editing...

32

"When SHFWW Goes Bad"......I gotta see that.....

33

Know anyone with a liver for sale? We tied into that jug of Scorpion Mescal you gave me and woke up with a cicada buzzing in my bed.

34

She may have told you that buzzing was a cicada, but I'm betting there's an on/off/rotate switch hidden somwhere.

35

You do know that the Scorpion Mescal was for "Display Purposes Only"?.....
